About Howlin’ Wolf

Howlin' Wolf (Chester Arthur Burnett, 1910-1976) was a legendary blues musician and one of the most influential figures in Chicago electric blues. Born in West Point, Mississippi, he migrated to Chicago in 1952 and quickly established himself as a dominant force in the blues scene. His deep, growling vocals and powerful stage presence became hallmarks of his style. Wolf recorded for Sun Records in Memphis before moving to Chicago, where he signed with Chess Records and released his most iconic material. His best-known songs include 'Smokestack Lightning,' 'Back Door Man,' and 'Spoonful,' which became blues standards. He remained a recording and touring artist until his death, influencing generations of rock and blues musicians.

Style

Howlin' Wolf pioneered the Chicago electric blues sound with raw, amplified guitars, heavy rhythms, and his distinctive deep, growling baritone vocals. His style blended Delta blues traditions with urban electric arrangements, creating powerful, primal blues that emphasized feeling over technical virtuosity.

Significance

As one of the most recorded and covered blues artists, Howlin' Wolf's influence extends far beyond blues into rock and roll. His Chess Records releases are essential vinyl collectibles, with original pressings highly sought by collectors, and his music remains foundational to understanding modern blues and rock music.
